Expansion appliances are orthodontic devices designed to broaden the narrow upper arch in both adults and children. These appliances, which can be either removable or fixed, are effective in quickly impacting dental structures, giving patient compliance. They primarily correct intermaxillary and dental arch relationships in the transverse direction and are instrumental in the early treatment of crossbites. The specific type of expansion appliance—slow or rapid—used in treatment is determined based on the individual’s clinical needs. This versatility makes them a valuable tool in orthodontic treatment planning.
